White Peacocks Facts
Several Asian countries have the peacock as their national bird, notably India. In the case of Burma it's a different species, the grey peacock-pheasant.White Peacock is one of those magic names, which is also associated with butterflies, The colorful Indian blue peacock (pavo cristatus) is known for the male’s impressive tail of many brilliant colors. Peacock refers to the male, while the females are called peahens, while “peafowl” is generally used to cover birds of both sexes. Peafowl originated in and around India and Ceylon but when the British Empire conquered India, they spread peafowl all over Europe and America. Suddenly, white peafowl began to appear and are now bred for that color in captivity.Peacocks get most of their colour from light reflection rather than a dye. The feathers have barbs, which in turn have rods. It is these rods that control how light reflects and produces the green, golden yellow, brown and bright blue. White peacocks have a slightly different arrangement of the rods thus don't develop the usual colours. The white Peacock is not different than the Peacocks. It’s not a species of peacock; it is a special peacock that has been born all white, due to a genetic variation. White peacocks are not albino. Albino animals have a complete lack of color and red or pink eyes, and albino skin is very pale. White peafowl have blue eyes and colored skin. Leucism is a genetic mutation that causes loss of pigmentation. Animals with leucism retain their normal eye color. It’s the feathers that do not have pigmentation. White feathers depend on which genes are dominant and which are recessive.White Peacocks are not found in the wild. Patches of white would make the Peacocks more visible to predators. The theory is that the recessive white coloration genes emerge in animals kept in captivity. This sometimes occurs with pet birds or animals. This gene mutation explains the existence of white peafowls. There is a variety of white color patterns that have appeared in peafowl bred in captivity:
Pied White – Combination of white and usual Indian blue colors.
Black shoulder pied- Coloration is normal except for white under parts, wings and a spot under the chin.
Black Shoulder Peahen- White, sprinkled with black spots.
