Topaz facts

  1. Topaz can be found in all colors of the rainbow. The most valuable color is red and is often referred to as imperial topaz. Less than 1% of all gem quality topazes exhibit this color.
  2. Topaz is one of the two designated birthstones for November. The amber colored version of topaz is the one most commonly known for being the November birthstone, since it is similar in appearance to November’s other birthstone, citrine. Blue topaz is even recognized by some as a December birthstone (even though there are already three designated birthstones for that month).
  3. The ancient Greeks believed that topaz had the power to increase one’s strength during times of trouble.
  4. One of the most well-known topaz gemstones is a 1680 carat colorless topaz that resides in the Portuguese crown. The gemstone was originally thought to be the largest diamond ever found until its true identity was discovered.
  5. Topaz is the designated gemstone for the 4th and 23rd anniversaries. Blue topaz is reserved for the 4th anniversary while imperial topaz is reserved for the 23rd anniversary.
  6. When worn as a necklace, topaz was once believed to drive away sadness and strengthen intellect.
  7. The majority of topaz can be found in Brazil. Some other notable locations for this gemstone include Russia, Germany, Zimbabwe, and Nigeria.
  8. Topaz has a rating of 8 out of 10 on the Mohs hardness scale for gemstones, making it a durable gemstone that can be worn daily without too much risk of damage.
  9. There are two theories about where the name topaz originated. One is that the name came from a small island in the Red Sea called Topazios. This island never actually produced any topaz gemstones, but instead produced peridot. In fact, before modern mineral detection methods were invented, topaz was often confused with peridot. The other theory surrounding the origin of its name comes from the Sanskrit word ‚Äútapas,‚ÄĚ which means fire.
  10. Pink topaz was first discovered in 19th century Russia. Since the gemstone was highly coveted, only the Czar, his family, and those he gave it to were allowed to own and wear the gem.
  11. Topaz is associated with loyalty, friendship, and faithfulness, making it an ideal gift for a wedding or anniversary.
